You guys already know that about a week and a half ago, we picked up two baby chicks to add to our family. What I haven’t told you yet is that the following day, we added another new family member.

Meet Dany! (Short for Daenerys) She’ll be 12 weeks old tomorrow. Her mom is a black Australian shepherd. Her dad is a lab/schnauzer mix. Since she’s a mix and we don’t know a lot about dad, we’re not quite sure how big she’ll get, but we’re assuming somewhere between 25-45 lbs.
The kids are absolutely in love with her. They’ve been great about helping out with taking Dany for walks and even picking up after her. Our rule is whoever is holding the leash has to clean up any messes, and so far that’s been working well (Levi only gets to hold the leash with supervision, so he’s exempt from that rule for now.)

After the issues we had with fostering an adult dog (poor rescue screening, not really the dog’s fault), I wasn’t sure I wanted to try bringing a dog into our house so soon. But I couldn’t help myself. I’m a dog person at heart. Mykl & I talked it over and decided that although puppies are a lot of work, we’d give it a shot so we could raise her and train her ourselves.
Dany was part of an accidental litter that needed a new home. Her breed mix has helped quite a bit with Mykl’s allergies (schnauzers are known to be better for folks with dog allergies due to their hair type). And with the girls home for most of the summer with us, the timing just worked out really well.
Even though she’s only been part of our family for a little over a week, we’re all totally smitten. We’ve brought her up to date on her vaccinations and started puppy classes at Twin Cities Obedience Training Club. She’ll be spayed when she’s just a little bit older, and you can bet that I’ll be sharing lots more photos of her as she grows up.
